Helena Sweater - Finished!

Pattern: Helena (<--click for free pattern on Knitty.com)
Yarn: Bernat Baby
Needles: Size 8

The sweater has been finished for about a week. It was a fun and quick knit.

I love the picot edge on the sleeves and the bottom. The ties are a nice change from buttons and buttonholes.

One of the reasons it knitted up so quickly is because the pattern stitch on the "skirt" portion of the sweater is very similar to two other projects I have knitted.

One was the Estonian wedding shawl. The center portion of the shawl is what is similar.

The other is the scarf from the same pattern, however with pearl beads that I knitted for my daughter.

I purchased sterling silver wire, beads and other items to knit these earrings. (<--click). I'm hoping it will take just one evening. There are three styles to select from and the pattern is free. I have to admit that after leaving the bead store with my purchase, I felt it would have been cheaper and easier to just buy earrings at Kohl's. However, I want to be able to say that "I knitted them".
Happy Knitting!

  1. WOW! BEAUTIFUL, Joansie!!!

I've been keeping my eye out for a good baby pattern; one of the doctors I had at Stanford is expecting a baby girl. But wow, and that shawl, and that shawl, and wow. Bravo!

  3. Oh what a beautiful baby sweater! My cousin's daughter is expecting twins in May. A long time coming....this pregnancy. I just found out...twin girls are on the way. I might have to take a break from socking knitting & knit some baby items.

All of your knitting is beautiful!

Earrings? How neat is that? Yep, you could go to a dept. store & get some, but where is the fun in that?

I just bought some Opal yarn!!! My mom saw the price tag & said, "Couldn't you have bought yourself a lot of nice socks for that price?"

    Yes, but where's the fun?

  4. Just gorgeous, and so sweet! Love the yarn you used. I definitely have to add this to my list of patterns to make.

Good luck with the earrings. Liat once tried to crochet wire with beads for a belt and the wire kept breaking. I don't think you could pay me to knit with wire! Hopefully your experience will be much more pleasant. :)

  5. And you were looking for an idea for a knitting class? That baby sweater would be about perfect. Look at all the neat skills to teach - picot hem, simple lace, etc.
    Love the shawls, too!

Can't wait to see how the earrings turn out!

  7. Gorgeous on all counts, sweater and shawls!

Funny, I have been working with wire at work that's so fine, I did say to one of my co-workers that I should save the scraps and see if I can knit with it. Too bad the "scraps" aren't a bit longer than they are!

  8. Oh I love that baby pattern so much! It's so pretty. I've been waiting to see what it looked like when you had finished and I love it so much I think I'll try and knit it up for my little baby girl (almost 4 weeks old). We're going to be going into winter soon in this part of the world.
    Your knitting is so beautiful!

  9. That little pink sweater is precious! All of the items you showed are gorgeous.

Your mention of finding the earrings cheaper already made reminds me of a conversation my hubby and I had just today.

I was explaining to my husband that a woman can easily spend a couple hundred dollars knitting herself a really nice sweater, depending on the yarn she uses. He was incredulous. He couldn't figure out why on earth they'd spend that money and then have to knit it, when they could just go to the store and buy one already knited and ready to wear. ;-Þ
